What is a dental filling?
A filling repairs part of a tooth that has been damaged by decay or injury. The damaged area is removed and the space is filled with a restorative material, shaped to match your bite. Tooth-coloured materials may be recommended, depending on where the tooth is and its condition.
When might you need a filling?
- Tooth decay (cavities)
- A chipped or cracked tooth
- Worn tooth surfaces
- An old filling that needs replacing
- Minor damage affecting how the tooth works
Not every cavity needs a filling. After examining the tooth, your dentist will explain whether a filling or another option is most appropriate.
